Thanks to everyone who attended the BTIERA Fall Dinner. It seemed to be a successful one and we don’t think anyone went away hungry. CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of the ticket draw: Verta’s hooked mat – Tony Hirtle, Hetty‘s painted chair – Corey Spidle, Adirondack chairs – Robert Graham, Comforter – Laura Lea Baker and Car care kit – Jacqueline Edwards. A big thanks to everyone who helped in any way — preparing and donating food and prizes, helping to set up and clean up, and lending a hand at the dinner. Photo credit: Susan van Gurp
Night Sky Tour
With Astronomer Guide – Paul Gray
Date: Sunday, August 6, 2017 at 9:30 to 10:15 pm
Location: Spruce Grove, Big Tancook Island, NS
(Off Big Tancook Island Road near civic addresses 214, 215 and / or 221, AKA Martha’s Oceanside Lot)
Paul Gray, astronomy enthusiast and explorer of the amazing night sky, will be visiting Big Tancook Island this weekend and in answer to many inquiries, will again conduct a night sky tour. He will be accompanied by his children of whom both Katherine and Nathan have discovered black holes making them the youngest ever sky enthusiasts to make these discoveries.
Like in past night sky adventures, they will be pointing out constellations, interesting sky features and will talk about the magnificent Milky Way.
Did you know that Tancook island boasts one of the darkest nights skies, making this a very special and vibrant visual event.
Come dressed for the chill of the evening descending to night. Bring protection from the mosquitoes and other insects. You may need a flashlight to help you find your way, and bring a comfortable chair of lounger from which to view the sky.
The forecast is for a clear night with moderate winds and evening temperature of about 20 degrees.
You are invited to park along the Dora Cross (odd civic numbers) side of the road
therefore avoiding creating congestion at the entrance to Spruce Grove.
All are Welcome ….
Judging by the enthusiastic crowd that arrived on the morning ferry on a perfect summer day, this well-organized event was a success.
Katie Baker aka “Tancook Island Girl” is to be congratulated for the thoughtful preparation needed to organize such an event.
2017 is a memorable year for Canada as it marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation. On July 1st we celebrated with typical Tancook enthusiasm and enjoyed a record turnout.
A lot of work went on behind the scenes to prepare for this celebration. We are grateful to the dedicated and hard-working Rec Centre Committee for organizing this festive day.
The following photos taken by Rosa Cross tell the story.
