Published: July 04, 2022 – Chronicle Herald – Saltwire

Elmith Leotus “Emmy” Hardy Born October 31, 1931, daughter to Howard and Dora Baker of Big Tancook Island, passed away July 1, 2022. Elmith or Emmy as we affectionally knew her, grew up on Big Tancook with her 10 brothers and sisters.
As many islanders do, Emmy left Tancook to find work in Halifax. She worked as a cashier for a grocery store for some years and then the Flamingo Restaurant until she retired and moved back to Tancook to care for her elderly parents. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing for Suttles and Seawinds and going to dances at the Island Community Center. She always had a smile and a loving heart to those who knew her. She eventually moved off the Island once more into Shoreham Village Seniors Complex where she would stay until she moved to Halifax with her daughter Valerie. After the untimely death of her only daughter, she moved into Maplestone Enhanced Care, where she finally felt at home. The staff treated her like family and adorned her room with her favorite things – butterflies. The staff enjoyed hearing stories she would share about her childhood memories and funny little sayings. Her niece, Evelyn Rodenhiser was a regular and loyal visitor, who kept Emmy up to date with the photos of family members and happenings. The family would like to express their appreciation for Evelyn’s devotion. Covid made it difficult for other family to visit. Elmith was predeceased by husband, Kenneth; daughter, Valerie Jean; brothers, Neil (Norma), Sterling, Keith (Nancy), Steadman, and sisters, Hosie (Lorraine), Shirley (Kenneth). Survived by brothers, Carl (Shirley), Dale (Neva), and sisters, Faye (Harvey), Verta (Stanley). Cremation has taken place and private committal for her and Valerie will be done at a later date. Donations may be made to Big Tancook Island Baptist Church.
