Age 88, passed away in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater on April 11, 2019. Elmer was a son of the late Ernest and Hazel Cross (of Big Tancook Island). He is survived by his daughters, Kathy (Gordon) Pate, George Town, Tex.; Suzette (Michael) Westhaver, Sims Settlement; son, Randy Cross, Dartmouth; grandsons, Michael (Colleen) Westhaver, Sims Settlement, Jamie (Sarah) Westhaver, Houston, Tex.; great-grandchildren, Caillin and Caleb Westhaver, Sims Settlement; Logan Cameron and Hudson Westhaver, Houston, Tex.; brothers, Robert (Ella) Cross, New Minas; John (Elaine) Cross, Martins River; Lillian Dyer, Sackville; sisters, Grace Henneberry, Spryfield; Faith (Bernard) Blinn, Halifax; Colleen (Philip) Levy, Sims Settlement and sister-in-law, Doris Levy, Little Tancook. He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine (Levy) Cross and sister, Doreen Baker. Elmer (Dad) lived 85 years on his beloved Tancook Island prior to moving to Sims Settlement where he owned and operated a general store. In later years, he was employed by the province as a deckhand on the William G. Ernest ferry service from Chester to Tancook. Dad was a kind and giving man, great supporter of political parties and a true hockey player to the core. Elmer’s passion for the ice saw him don the skates until the good old age of 87, meeting along the way many firends from both the Tancook Island team as well as the Chester Oldtimers. Dad’s joy in life was reflecting the play by play of each game with his hockey playing friend, Jack Clothier, not only for the old timer’s league but the NHL games as well. We, the family, would like to take this time to thank Dr. Alisa Visram and nurse Heather at the VG Hematology Clinic, South Shore Palliative Care Unit, Caitlin Garland and South Shore Regional Hospital as well as the EHS Services of Nova Scotia for the outstanding care and kindness provided to our father; you are true professionals. In memory of Elmer, please help a friend in need, donate to a food bank or reach out to a local Minor Hockey Association so children can share the love of the game as Dad did. Visitation will be 2-4, and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 17th in Davis Funeral Home, Chester. A family burial will be held at a later date.
